Engineering and Health Community Outreach

EHCO

ABOUT

Engineering and Health Community Outreach (EHCO) is a service-based initiative focused on improving healthcare in underserved communities through local and international partnerships. Our mission is to address social determinants of health by engaging students in meaningful projects that improve community health outcomes, while also fostering educational growth and leadership skills.

EHCO operates through various committees dedicated to recruitment, securing grants, organizing transportation, planning fundraisers, and developing health projects both locally (Ann Arbor) and internationally. Our key annual project is a service trip to Memphis, TN, in partnership with Serve 901, where we engage with community leaders to promote health equity and education. During the second semester, we finalize an international partner project, continuing our focus on health longevity.

We encourage members to participate in bi-weekly discussions, reflect on service observations, and work on developing and publishing literature about their projects through MHeal and Michigan Daily.

2023 TRIP

After two years off due to COVID, EHCO finally returned to Memphis for Spring Break this year. The volunteers worked with Neighborhood Christian Center, Room In the Inn, Christ Community Health, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, JA Biztown, MicroPort Orthopedics, and Memphis Athletic Ministries for volunteering and professional development events. To learn more about the trip, visit EHCO’s 2023 E-portfolio!

2020 trip

During the 2020 EHCO trip, the volunteers worked with Kirby Middle School, Dexter Elementary School, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Grizzlie’s Prep, V&E Greenline, and Church Health Wellness Center. They also attended professional development and networking opportunities with Choose901, and MicroPort Orthopedics.

This trip has a real special way of bringing people together for the greater good for not only the community but for self growth and discovery, and I am so grateful to have been a part of it
— Sarah Montañez
Each and every one of the activities we did during the week sparked a conversation, changed a perspective, and/or drew us closer as a group. Of course, the most important thing was knowing that what we were doing was having an actual positive impact on the communities we were serving
— Emmett Springer
