our mission

Our mission is to use education, needs assessment, design innovation, and social entrepreneurship to improve access to health care in underserved communities. We envision a world where every person has access to appropriate, affordable, and high-quality health care. We value collaboration, cultural sensitivity, equity, innovation, interdisciplinarity, and socially-engaged design.

Our organization is completely student run, and is composed of over 250 students ranging over several academic disciplines. Our members are dedicated to socially engaged design, where we work directly with communities across the globe in order to understand their needs and find innovative solutions catered specifically to them. We value sustainability, and our projects are all long term endeavors with the intention of creating significant impact on the accessibility of healthcare worldwide.

We strive towards global healthcare equity

socially engaged design

Here at M-HEAL, we are committed to establishing & maintaining long-term partnerships to work towards long lasting, impact-oriented change. In order to do so, we work directly alongside community members to understand needs and implement design solutions . We take care to be mindful of cultural, economic, social and political factors when developing our designs in order to ensure sustainable use and empower our partner communities. This framework comes from the University of Michigan’s Center for Socially Engaged Design (C-SED). Click below to learn more

diversity, equity & inclusion

M-HEAL strives to foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment with members and partners who feel engaged in our common mission. We have over 250 fully engaged members. Our membership is composed of students from all academic backgrounds. Over half our members are in engineering, all disciplines such as Biomedical, Chemical, Mechanical, and Electrical. Yet, over the past few years our membership has diversified to include an impressive set of interdisciplinary students. Almost half of members now study business, public health, nursing, entrepreneurship, informatics, and more. All members able to use skills learned from their discipline to forward the organization’s global health initiatives, while also having the opportunity to learn and enhance new skills.
