About Us

We believe in education, service, community, development & sustainability

Founded in 2006, M-HEAL (Michigan Health Engineered for All Lives) is a student organization at the University of Michigan that fosters interdisciplinary work in global health and design with under-served communities using human-centered design philosophy. We engage students through project teams each working to develop a healthcare technology, as well as through hosting guest lectures, interactive workshops, and volunteer opportunities. In all of our activities, we focus on our core goals: education, service, community, development, and sustainability.

INCUBATOR

The incubator is group of teams in the early stages of the design process. These teams receive support from leadership and advisors to develop their ideas. Anyone can join a team, and anyone with an idea can start a team in the incubator. The goal of the incubator is to provide members with the resources to develop their skills and ideas and to prepare members to become future leaders of the organization.

Incubating teams work on a problem statement throughout the year, gaining valuable experience in the design process. Developed incubating teams have the opportunity to become full-fledged project teams.

PROJECT TEAMS

Our teams focus on innovation to tackle specific health care needs born out of either a senior design trip abroad or a SANA spring needs assessment trip. Teams work closely with low-resource communities worldwide to tackle myriad health issues. Most teams have travel opportunities within the team to visit with established community partners and clinics from the country they work with. Teams are at different stages in the design process, some are beginning their designs, others are prototyping while others are building and distributing. Our projects follow the socially engaged design approach and believe in long term, sustainable solutions. Teams usually are composed of subcommittees that allow for students of various skills and disciplines to work together towards their project’s mission.
