Meet M-HEAL
We believe in education, service, community, development & sustainability
Founded in 2006, M-HEAL (Michigan Health Engineered for All Lives) is a student organization at the University of Michigan that fosters interdisciplinary work in global health and design with under-served communities using human-centered design philosophy. We engage students through project teams each working to develop a healthcare technology, as well as through hosting guest lectures, interactive workshops, and volunteer opportunities. In all of our activities, we focus on our core goals: education, service, community, development, and sustainability.
OUR PROGRAMS
Incubator
The Incubator is a group of teams in the early stages of the design process. These teams receive support from leadership and advisors to develop their ideas. Anyone can join a team, and anyone with an idea can start a team in the incubator. The goal of the Incubator is to provide members with the resources to develop their skills and ideas and to prepare members to become future leaders of the organization.
Incubator teams work on a problem statement throughout the year, gaining valuable experience in the design process. Developed Incubator teams have the opportunity to become full-fledged project teams.
EHCO
Engineering and Health Community Outreach (EHCO) is a service-based initiative dedicated to improving healthcare access and health outcomes in underserved communities through local and international partnerships. Members collaborate on health-focused projects, fundraising, outreach, and service trips while developing leadership, educational, and research skills. Through community engagement and reflection, EHCO works to promote health equity, education, and long-term community well-being.
OUR PROJECT TEAMS
Our teams focus on innovation to tackle specific health care needs born out of either a senior design trip or a spring needs assessment trip. Teams work closely with low-resource communities worldwide to tackle myriad health issues. Most teams have travel opportunities within the team to visit with established community partners and clinics from the country they work with. Teams are at different stages in the design process, some are beginning their designs, others are prototyping while others are building and distributing. Our projects follow the socially engaged design approach and believe in long term, sustainable solutions. Teams usually are composed of subcommittees that allow for students of various skills and disciplines to work together towards their project’s mission.
M-HEAL OPPORTUNITIES
MENTORSHIP
Through our internal MentorMatch Program, get specifically paired with a group of like-minded students and upperclassmen mentor who have walked the rough journey of college and are happy to help you along the way as well as provide exclusive resources to supplement your academic and personal success. Alumni MentorMatch connects students with M-HEAL alumni in their respective fields, providing personalized mentorship, guidance, and support.
VOLUNTEERING
M-HEAL offers several volunteering opportunities through partnerships with several organizations on and off-campus! Members can give back to the community, engage with meaningful causes, and gain hands-on experience while making a positive impact. These opportunities allow students to connect with others, explore their interests, and put their skills toward serving communities in need.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
M-HEAL hosts a variety of helpful professional development events in collaboration with various industry partners. Our members get access to a variety of industry, faculty and alumni contacts and get notified of new opportunities through our connections and partnerships with the College of Engineering and other various departments. Additionally, we host a variety of networking events to allow students to establish professional relationships on their own. As an organization we are committed to our member’s future success and take pride in the amazing accomplishments of our esteemed alumni. To learn more about where our alumni have ended up, check back soon for our alumni collage.
ENGAGEMENT
Our organization values building connections beyond individual project teams. Through a variety of social and engagement opportunities, members can meet peers from across M-HEAL, expand their network, and connect with others in a welcoming environment.
